Maya H - The Substance (with text)
This image is the one I used for the Story Illustration assignment. It is based on the 2024 body horror film The Substance; I based my image on a couple of the posters for the film that feature an eye with multiple pupils and irises, sort of one duplicating/splitting into the others. To get this effect, I took photos of my friend's eye looking in different directions, then I combined the images in Photoshop to get the multiplied pupils and irises. This ended up being significantly more difficult and complicated than I anticipated.

Maya H’s piece, The Substance, captures a haunting and surreal mood inspired by the 2024 body horror film of the same name. The photo centers on a glowing green eye, with multiplied irises that create a sense of distortion and unease. The repetition draws the viewer in, echoing the film’s theme of identity and transformation.
Technically, Maya shows strong Photoshop skill—merging multiple shots of her friend’s eye to simulate duplication and motion. The composition balances clarity and chaos, with the green hue enhancing the eerie, science-fiction atmosphere. The added text integrates smoothly and supports the cinematic aesthetic.
Overall, the image is visually arresting and conceptually strong. It effectively mirrors the unsettling tone of The Substance while demonstrating advanced photo manipulation and creative intent.
