Hayden C - Fourth Place
The title of this piece is “Fourth Place,” and it comes from the obvious subject of my photo: my fourth-place ribbons. It was taken in the studio with my Canon camera. I used a bright white light on the left and a softer yellow light on the right. I did this specifically to make sure things did not end up too monotone and washed out from the amount of white in the photo. I edited mainly by bringing highlights and whites up and lightening shadows to bring out the colors. I leaned toward cooler tones in temperature and warmer in tint to both make the white pop out whine also bringing out the gold in the ribbons. I used the spot healing tool to clean up any ribbons that may have been smudged, got dirt on them, or any weird-looking highlights that had appeared while editing. I wish I’d added more ribbons to the top left to make use of the entire frame, as the blank spot begins to look weird when you stare too long.

Hayden C’s “Fourth Place” is a visually balanced and thoughtfully composed photograph that turns simple fourth-place ribbons into an elegant subject. The use of contrasting lighting — bright white on one side and softer yellow on the other — adds depth and prevents the image from feeling flat despite the dominant white tones. The attention to detail in editing, such as lightening shadows and adjusting color temperature, shows a strong understanding of how to enhance texture and highlights. The photo feels both polished and personal, with the ribbons symbolizing quiet persistence and pride in effort. Overall, it’s a clean, professional piece that reflects technical skill and emotional meaning.
This is a really cool photo! I especially like all of the smooth textures and the different shapes and directions that the highlights go--it looks like a sea of shiny fabric.
This picture is so visually satisfying. Everything is so clean and glowy, I could stare at this all day. The clear focus on the ribbons really adds to that feeling and Iike how its busy, but not messy. However, i think it could be better if the fabric on the uper left corner was either edited out or cropped out of the photo just for aesthetic.
