Maya H- Dog's Mouth

This is a photo of my dog's mouth; I took it for my Sustained Investigation Series 1. While editing it, I mostly sharpened and clarified it as well as increasing the contrast and vibrance. To create the mirrored/kaleidoscope effect, I first cropped the edges off of the original image so the subject would take up more of the frame; I then created a new file that was double the length and width of the image; after that, I put four copies of the original image into the file, put them each into one of the four corners, and then rotated and flipped each of them so they would reflect the one opposite of it.

Maya H’s Dog’s Mouth is an inventive and striking manipulation of a simple photograph into an abstract, symmetrical composition. What began as a close-up of her dog’s mouth transforms into a surreal image through mirroring and repetition. The kaleidoscopic structure produces a sense of both fascination and discomfort — the sharp teeth and fleshy textures evoke organic symmetry that feels almost mechanical or alien.

From a technical standpoint, Maya demonstrates advanced control over digital editing. Her process — cropping, layering, flipping, and reflecting — shows thoughtful composition and experimentation. The enhanced sharpness, contrast, and saturation intensify the natural details, creating a vivid tension between beauty and distortion. The mirrored pattern draws the eye inward, emphasizing repetition and balance without losing the raw realism of the subject.

Conceptually, Dog’s Mouth pushes the boundaries between natural form and digital abstraction. It invites viewers to see something familiar — a dog’s mouth — in an entirely new, unsettling way. The work succeeds as a study of transformation, turning an everyday image into something symbolic of symmetry, duality, and perception.
